Assembling Words and Sentences Hindi is a phonetic language. Hindi words are pronounced exactly as they are written. You don't have to memorise the correct spelling of a word. All consonants have an 'a' sound inherent in them. To write the English word 'come' in Devanagari script all you do is assemble the two consonants क and म by keeping them together and joining them with the horizontal headstroke as shown below: कम Similarly to write the Hindi word 'kamal' (lotus) you will simply add ल to the end of the above word and join all three letters together with the horizontal line: कमल To modify the sound of word 'kamal' to 'komal' (soft, delicate) you will add the modifier sign (maattraa) of vowel ो after क as: कोमल It is that simple. Here are a few examples of simple words starting with letter क:
Whenever a Hindi word requires a consonant without its inherent 'a' sound, it is written without its down-stroke (da.ndaa). Here are a few examples of such words:
You can start your writing practice by copying these words on your note book. As in any language, Hindi sentences are formed by putting two or more words in together, for example:
The sequence in which the words must be placed together is governed by the Hindi syntax which has been explained at length in our Speaking course (Click here to Join). Throughout this course we have included many Hindi words, sentences, songs and dialogues with their translation in English. You should revisit these lessons and practice by writing them on your notebook. When you view these pages again try to read their Devanagari text, rather than the Roman text. In the next chapter you will learn to type in Hindi using your computer keyboard.
